How do you get thick and smooth background vocals?
"How do you get background vocals to sound like Def Leppard?. That is thick and smooth as it is on Hysteria engineered by Nigel Green, mixed by Mike Shipley and produced by Mutt Lange. How did they do it and how would one go about it if you wanted the same today?"
One thing is for sure, Mutt Lange wouldn't want to reveal the tricks of his trade.
However, there isn't really a great deal of trickery involved. Only a little.
Firstly, it is clear from documentary videos that Mutt Lange performs many of the background vocals himself.
He doesn't appear to have an outstanding voice or vocal talent. But he sings very precisely in both tuning and timing.
So this is the first requirement - background vocalists who can sing precisely in tune and in time.
Let's suppose that you only have one person to perform all of the background vocals.
You could achieve a thick sound through multi-layered harmonies. But even if there is just a single background vocal line, it is possible to make it thick, rich and smooth.
If you record exactly the same line four times, then the result will be instantly thicker.
If your system has the ability to vary the speed at which it records, you could set the speed just a little slower on two takes - say 2% and 4%, and correspondingly faster on the other two takes.
Then when you play back the result at the correct speed, the harmonics of each recording will be shifted slightly differently. This is an 'instant thickener' and always works well.
Another method is to pitch-shift the tracks slightly. Pitch shift is measured in cents, where one cent is one-hundredth of a semitone.
If you apply shifts of -4, -8, +4 and +8 cents to the four tracks, then once again the result will be instant thickness. I prefer the previous technique, but this works fine.
Some delay plug-ins allow you to modulate the delay time. So the delay time varies cyclically. And because of this, so does the pitch.
If you process each track through a delay of say 100 milliseconds, with a different speed and amount of modulation on each track, then the result will have excellent thickness.
You can compensate for the delay by moving the tracks 100 milliseconds earlier in time.
Generally if you have more than one singer, then the result will be thicker already. But you can still apply all of the above techniques.
If you work out four background vocal lines, and you record each one four times according to the guidelines given above, you will have a 16-voice chorus that will be thick and smooth indeed.

Depression
New study shows possible link
A new study suggests teens who view too much television are more likely to become depressed as adults.
It's unclear whether TV might have the same effect on adults. So, if you're watching the tube too much, try tuning out and tackling chores, talking to a friend or keeping busy in other ways instead.

Have a good laugh - "Worry Husband"
While, the fourth Daddy-to-be were in uncontrolled worry. All the 3 daddies asked him,why do you seem so worry??"He answered, "I am working with Seven-Eleven!"
Will Loud music damage your hearing?
Your hearing WILL be damaged by exposure to loud sound. Both level and duration of exposure are factors. By far the most common source of loud sound is the pair of earpieces connected to your personal stereo. Going to clubs where loud music is played night after night is also a risk. Factory noise can be a problem, but the factory where you work should offer you ear protection. Make sure you use it.
Hearing damage, by the way, is permanent. Tiny hair cells in the inner ear are destroyed and they never grow back.
As a sound engineer or recording engineer, your ears are vital to your career. But you risk damaging your hearing every day you work. Possibly the worst situation is when you are a trainee engineer working in the studio with someone who is already partially deaf. They might want to work at levels that are painful for you. But you are not in a position to ask them to turn it down. Not if you want to stay in the room.
The moral is to expose yourself to loud sound for as short a duration as possible. If you work all day with high levels in the studio, then don't listen to any more loud music at home.
To close, here is one of the standard jokes of the recording industry...
What do you call a recording engineer who over the course of many years in the studio has become totally deaf?
A producer!

How Does it Feel?
I've been asked that in lots of interviews.
The first time it happened to me, I was in my home state (Louisiana)on Interstate 10 between Lake Charles and Lafayette. My littleToyota's radio was churning out tunes, when suddenly MY voicecame out of the speakers.
I felt the hair stand up on the back of my neck. My realitybent out of shape for a moment. This was long before the days of Myspace, so mentally, I just didn't have a place to put this event. MY SONG WAS BEING PLAYED ON THE RADIO!
When I realized that it was actually happening, I unconsciouslypulled over to wipe the tears out of my eyes so I wouldn't wreck. My only regret was that I was in the car alone at the time and had no one to high five with! I told my family later and we all jumped and danced around in the kitchen like a bunchof idiots.
IF YOU THINK THAT'S SOMETHING
That was certainly a significant mile-marker for me personally. And yet it paled fairly quickly. There were others that followed (like getting my first royalty check--that was prettyfun.)
But there are two things that have consistently outshone that "first time on the radio" moment: One is any time I'm playing live and the room grows quiet as I start to play a song I've written, and everyone in the room kind of "breathes in"...Priceless. I'd do it for free til I die.
The other one is when I get letters from people who have heard one of my songs and been "changed" somehow by it.
If you write songs, you know how unglamorous the writer's roomcan be. It's you, 4 walls, and a guitar or keyboard.
But think about it... from that little nothing place, I can fire a friendly missile that will cause someone miles away (and even years later) to pull their car off the road and weep.
I can sing a tale that will mend a thousand marriages, givingsomeone the hope to carry on even when it's hard.
My pen can pour out a simple song that makes me mysteriously "important" to people I've never even met.
I've been well-paid from my songs, and so can you... but that still doesn't hold a candle to getting a letter from someone who says my song "changed their life."
(I get that kind of feedback a lot from a song I co-wrote withmy friend Chuck White, called "About Goodbye"...you can hear iton my Myspace page: www.myspace.com/morgancryarmusic )
As songwriters, we also sometimes get to provide the "movie soundtrack" for people's special moments.
You know yourself that when you hear certain songs, you feel apang of emotion (happy or sad) only because that's what was playing when something important happened to you.
THE BEST AWARD
Yes, I've had the ego boost of accepting awards among my peers. There have been #1 single parties where I was the guest of honor. Getting all dressed up and getting on camera makes you feel important for a moment.
Going from Lousiana redneck to respected songwriter is a surrealexperience. But...
Having people express true-life gratitude and appreciation for one of my songs far outweighs all the glamorous stuff.
If you've never had this experience, I can help you make it cometrue. There are skills I can teach you that will let you writesongs that wrestle people to the ground and change them.
If you want to write great songs, just click here.
I wish you all the best.

A Shocking Heart-Health Fact
A new study bears bad news for women with high cholesterol—if a woman has a heart attack, she's less likely to get the timely care she needs in the ER than if she were a man. Why? The reasons are complex, from differing symptoms in women to old stereotypes, like only men have heart attacks. In any case, the best way to protect yourself is to know the warning signs of heart trouble and to demand immediate medical care.
The cleanest drum tracks you ever heard.
The sound we like from recorded drums is a hyped-up, ultra-clear version that could only be heard for real by a space alien with eight or more prehensile ears. No wonder it is so difficult to achieve.
To capture drums in ultra-clarity, each drum has to be close miked. This means that we need one mic for each drum, one for the hihat, and then two overheads to pick up the cymbals and the general sound of the set.
The problem is though that each mic (other than the overheads) doesn't pick up only its assigned drum - it picks up the rest of the set too, and pretty loud.
Solo a mic and you will hear this very clearly.
And all that spill from the other drums and cymbals is what is causing the 'mush' that you will struggle so hard to get rid of.
Of course, the first defense against mush is to take great care over the positioning of the mics. The next step that many engineers take is to use noise gates on all of the individual mics. This totally silences each mic other than when its assigned drum is played.
This works to an extent. But there are some problems...
Firstly, it is very difficult to set the threshold of the gate so that it reliably opens when a drum is hit, and is reliably closed when there is so much noise all around the mic it is gating.
Secondly, the 'on and offness' of a gate is extreme. Any problems can be clearly heard. Gates generally have a control to reduce the amount of attenuation provided when closed, but it is still an 'either/or' situation.
Expanders can be better. Expanders too have a threshold, but they gradually increase attenuation below the threshold, rather than switching suddenly.
But there is a unit that is even better than an expander. And you won't believe what it is...
A Dolby A noise reduction unit in playback mode.
Dolby A is a noise reduction system that was designed back in the 1960s to reduce the hiss from analog tape. It prospered right up to the point where digital multitrack was a viable alternative. From then on, the reason to use analog was because of its characteristic sound, so noise reduction was pointless. If you wanted freedom from noise, you used a digital multitrack recorder.
But if you could get your hands on a few Dolby A units now - models 360 and 361 are good - you will find that they are excellent for cleaning up drums.
Dolby A works by splitting the frequency range into four bands and processing each band independently. On playback, signals above -40 dB or so are left unaltered, signals below -40 dB are progressively lowered in level up to around 10 dB maximum.
In normal use, the reverse of that process would be used during recording. But engineers in the 1970s would commonly record the drums without Dolby A encoding but use Dolby on playback to get the multiband expansion it provides.
And because it splits the signal into four bands, it is better than a simple expander can ever be.
There is one drawback - Dolby A provides a double layer of processing at high frequencies, so the output in playback mode won't just be expanded, it will be over-expanded at high frequencies. But this is a small problem that can be dealt with using a little EQ.
Dolby A units can be bought secondhand for a tiny fraction of their original cost, and for drum recording they are worth their (significant) weight in gold.
Or perhaps someone right this minute is developing a Dolby A plug-in...
